The latest CDC data reports Autism Spectrum Disorder affecting about 1 in 68 children. 1 in 6 children in the US are estimated to have a developmental disability of various ranges.
What is Autism?
Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) are a group of neuro-developmental disorders of brain development marked by the following characteristics in varying degrees:
- Impairments in social skills,
- Impairments in communication, and
- Restricted interests or repetitive behaviors
Who Autism Affects
Autism affects children across all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. Autism spectrum disorders are almost five times more common in boys and it is one of the fastest-growing developmental disorders in the united states. Research indicates children who start therapy at a young age attain better outcomes.
How Autism is Treated
There is currently no cure for autism, however Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) has been proven effective through decades of research. It is widely recognized as a safe and effective treatment for autism, even being endorsed by the U.S. Surgeon General and many state and federal agencies.
